Special Operations Section Commander

Major Elder Dancy is currently assigned as the Commander of Special Operations Section where he oversees Accident Investigation, the Air Unit, Motors, Mounted Patrol, High Intensity Traffic Team,  Tactical Traffic, SWAT, Special Permits and the Film/Entertainment Liaison. He joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1989.  

During his 27 year tenure, Dancy has worked various assignments throughout the Department.  As a police officer, he worked in Zone 4, where he served as a beat officer.   Later, he was selected to work in the Special Operations Section as a Mounted Patrol Officer. 

As a Sergeant, Dancy was assigned to the Red Dog Unit.  When he was promoted in 2003 as a Lieutenant, he worked various assignments in Zone 5 to include Precinct Commander of Midtown, Auburn Avenue, and Zone 5 Investigations. He was assigned as Assistant Commander in Special Operations Section.  Later, Dancy was assigned as the Background/Recruitment Unit Commander in 2007.  During his tenure, the Unit aggressively recruited and hired a record setting 251 officers.  As a result, Dancy was selected as Supervisor of the Year in 2007.  Early 2010, Dancy was appointed to the rank of Captain and was assigned as the Assistant Airport Commander. 

In September 2010, Elder Dancy was appointed the rank of Major and assigned as the Commander of the Office of Professional Standards.  From 2013 – 2016, Major Dancy served as the Corporate Services Section Commander.  Later in 2016, he served as Information Services Commander.  In January 2017, Major Dancy was assigned as Commander of Special Operations Section. 

Major Dancy is a Mississippi native who moved to Atlanta to join the Department.  He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University in Louisiana.  Also, he earned a Master’s degree in Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University.  He currently resides in Southeast Atlanta.
