As the Director of Public Affairs for the Atlanta Police Department, Carlos Campos has responsibility for both internal and external communications for the department, as well as oversight of access to public records.
Before entering into public relations, Mr. Campos was a daily newspaper reporter and editor for 17 years. He worked for The Associated Press, the Daily News (Gwinnett County, Ga.), The Times-Picayune (New Orleans) and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a variety of editorial roles, including political and public policy reporter and suburban bureau chief.
After a 17-year career in journalism, he worked for the Atlanta office of the international public relations firm Manning, Selvage & Lee where he provided strategic communications and media relations counsel to Fortune 500 companies.
In 2010, he joined the Atlanta Police Department serving in the role of Public Affairs Director under Chief George N. Turner, until his departure to the private sector in 2014.
Most recently, he was a Vice President in the Corporate Communications function for Synchrony Financial, a Fortune 500 consumer financial services company based in Stamford, Conn. His duties included media relations, content creation and crisis counseling. Mr. Campos re-joined APD in 2017, following the appointment of Chief Erika Shields.
