The Atlanta Police Department is committed to being a force for positive change in our city. To be truly successful in this endeavor, we know that we must strive to do more than simply protect and serve. We must become and remain actively involved in our communities, engaging and partnering with civic groups and individual citizens to achieve our shared goal of creating a safer and better Atlanta for all.
The pages within this section provide details on various programs and events that showcase the Atlanta Police Departments active involvement in the communities where we work, live and serve.
To strengthen and further our relationship with our communities, and also to help provide vital support to the Atlanta Police Department, the Atlanta Police Foundation sponsors a variety of unique events each year, including:
The Annual Policeman's Ball
The Annual Policeman's Ball is a gala event that gives our community leaders an opportunity to show their support and appreciation for the men and women of the Atlanta Police Department, who go to work and put themselves in harm's way to protect our city and its residents. This fun-filled, celebratory evening is one not to be missed.
The Annual "Crime Is Toast" Breakfast
With close to 1,000 attendees each year, the "Crime Is Toast" Breakfast is one of the Atlanta Police Foundation's signature events. This important annual breakfast includes a "state of public safety" address where both the Mayor and Atlanta Police Chief give an annual report on crime in the city. They also lay out current goals and objectives for improvement as we continue our unprecedented momentum in crime reduction, while also effectively changing the perception of crime in Atlanta.
The breakfast is also an opportunity to recognize the achievements and courageous actions of some of Atlanta's finest officers and citizens. The awards ceremony and tribute to the men and women in blue is a very moving experience for the business and community leaders in attendance, as well as a significant morale boost for the officers.
Atlanta's Finest 5K Run
Held each year, the Run is a fun way for whole families, and the entire community, to support the Police Foundation in its vision of making Atlanta a safe city that is good for people, good for business and good for life. 2008 marked the sixth annual running of our 5K race, with more than 800 runners and 200 members of the police department participating.
Link Up Against Crime
Now in its fourth year, the Link Up Against Crime golf tournament is an opportunity to play 18 holes of golf with Atlanta's Finest, meet Atlanta area sports celebrities and play at one of Georgia's many premier golfing venues! The event features the chance to golf with the command staff of APD, a reception with Police Chief Richard Pennington, and live and silent auctions featuring airline tickets, trip excursions, golf merchandise and more. Event attendees receive a premier gift bag including a top name brand golf shirt. This shotgun scramble tournament is an event that is not to be missed!
APD Drive & Shoot
Held annually at the Atlanta Police Department's Herbert T. Jenkins Training Center, the "APD Drive & Shoot" gives corporate executives a unique opportunity to participate in training designed for Atlanta Police Officers. The event consists of firearms range shooting, the firearms training simulator (FATS), running the obstacle course, a car skid simulator, and training with SWAT. Guaranteed to enhance team building and camaraderie among participants, the "APD Drive & Shoot" is also a great way to improve community relations with the Atlanta Police Department. The event includes lunch and an awards reception recognizing outstanding potential "police in training" from the Atlanta business community.
Programs offered by the Atlanta Police Department, with support from the Atlanta Police Foundation, which helps empower positive change for the officers and citizens of our city include:
Atlanta Housing Fair
The Atlanta Police Foundation has a goal of increasing the number of City-employed police officers living inside the City of Atlanta by 5% every year for the next three years. Currently, only 22% of Atlanta's police officers live within the City limits. This event is just one strategy the Foundation is using to increase homeownership among Atlanta Police Department officers in Atlanta and is part of a larger, multi-program strategy to increase police visibility, reduce crime and improve emergency preparedness for all Atlanta residents.
Crime Stoppers Atlanta
The Atlanta Police Foundation and the Atlanta Police Department launched Crime Stoppers Atlanta on January 29, 2007.
An anonymous tip line, Crime Stoppers is an internationally utilized program that works on the basis of a strong partnership between the community, the media, and law enforcement. Over the years Crime Stoppers has maintained an impressive national conviction rate of over 95%.
