Barbara Cavender

Major|Chief of Staff

Major Barbara Cavender grew up in Zone 3 and joined the police department in December 1986. She attended the Atlanta Public Schools and has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. She has served as an officer in Zone 2, Zone 4, Red Dog and the Mounted Patrol Unit. She was promoted to Sergeant in 1996 and served in the Red Dog Unit as a field supervisor, administrative sergeant and K-9 supervisor. She went on to supervise in the Criminal Investigations Division in various units such as the Gang Unit, Narcotics Unit and the Robbery Unit. In December 2002, she was promoted to Lieutenant and served as a unit commander in Zone 1, Red Dog, License & Permits and as the administrative lieutenant for the Special Enforcement Section.

She has received many commendations and was selected as the Supervisor of the Year in 2008. In 2010, she was appointed to Captain and held the position of Assistant Zone Commander of Zone 4. On July 21, 2011, Captain Barbara Cavender was promoted to Major and Commander of Zone 3. In 2012, Zone 3 had the highest crime reduction in the city. In 2014, Major Cavender was assigned to the Special Enforcement Section once again. She has served as Chief of Staff since January 2015.

Major Cavender is a proud parent of a son named Camren.
