Major Peter Ries was appointed to the rank of Major in March of 2020 and is assigned as the Chief of Staff
 
Major Ries has held the ranks of Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Investigator, and Officer. As a Captain, he was the Assistant Commander for Zone 4 in Southwest Atlanta. In the course of his time as Lieutenant, he commanded both the Crime Analysis Unit and the Criminal Intelligence Unit. 
 
During two stages of his career, Major Ries served in the Narcotics Unit as a Sergeant and an Investigator. In the Sergeant supervisory role, he managed the administrative functions of the Narcotics Unit. As an Investigator, he worked in an undercover capacity on the street level to investigate the selling of illegal drugs.
 
He began his career with the Atlanta Police Department in 2003 as a patrol officer in Zone 3, Southeast Atlanta.
 
Major Ries received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Bowling Green State University.  Additionally, Major Ries earned a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Bowling Green State University.  Major Ries is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
