About the Renewal of Alcohol License for Businesses
The City of Atlanta Police Department License and Permit Unit regulates the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages on premises via the issuance of an alcohol license. All alcohol licenses expire on December 31st of each year and must be renewed by then in order for a business to continue the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages.
If you are registering for the first time, contact Atlanta Police Department License & Permits Unit to have your online registration linked to your account once you have successfully registered on the portal. DO NOT APPLY FOR A NEW APPLICATION.

Other Required Documents for Renewal
If Restaurant, you may be required to submit : CERTIFIED STATEMENT FROM PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT
- City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances Section 10-106(c) requires that certain restaurants must provide at the time of renewal or original application a statement from a certified public accountant evidencing that the establishment derived at least 50 percent of its gross food and beverage sales from the sale of prepared meals of food. This requirement only applies to restaurants which are exempt from the distance requirements pursuant to 10-88(e). Restaurants that are not exempt from the distance requirements pursuant to 10-88(e) are restaurants which provide any live entertainment on the premises and which are not located:
- (i)Within a mixed-use development (as that term is defined in section 1629.001(24)) that has zoning approval for at least 50,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of office space and 300 residential units; or
- (ii)Within a multi-building complex, which, for purposes of this code section, shall mean a group of buildings planned, developed and managed as a unit which is comprised of at least 50,000 square feet of retail shopping and/or restaurant space, at least 50,000 square feet of institutional office space; at least 100,000 square feet of space used for research and education, and at least 100,000 square feet of conference center space, as long as such multi-building complex is located on a college campus. Under no circumstances may music and/or live entertainment be provided in an outdoor dining area; or
-
(iii)Within a mixed-use development (as that term is defined in section 1629.001(24)), comprised of not less than 99,000 total square feet, that has zoning approval for at least 2,000 square feet of retail space, 3,000 square feet of office space and at least 70 residential units, which is located within the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Atlanta Downtown Development Authority and is also located within an Urban Enterprise Zone created by the city.
If 5% Retail Package, you MUST submit : CERTIFIED STATEMENT FROM PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT
- The failure of an applicant for renewal to provide the police department with a statement from a certified public accountant evidencing that a location derived less than the percentage established by ordinance of gross receipts from the sale of alcoholic beverages, shall result in the denial of a renewed license. (ref. City of Atlanta Code of Ordinance 10-106 (e).
If Nightclub, you MUST submit : CERTIFIED STATEMENT FOR PARKING VERIFICATION
- All licensees who are dependent upon some contractual agreement or special exception to meet the minimum parking requirements set forth by the Zoning Code must provide, on an annual basis, proof that they will continue to have a contractual or legal interest in those spaces throughout the upcoming year. (ref. City of Atlanta Code of Ordinance 10-106 (b)
If Restaurant, you MUST submit : SMOKING EXEMPTION AFFIDAVIT (NOTARIZED) - If Requested
- Will you be applying for a Certificate of Exemption from the City of Atlanta’s Prohibition of Smoking? (See City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances Sec. 86-32 – Prohibition of smoking, and Sec. 10-76. – Indoor Air Certificate of Exemption)
If yes, please provide a statement from a certified public accountant demonstrating you are eligible for the exemption per City of Atlanta Code Sec. 86-33(2) – Areas exempt from smoking prohibitions.

Alcohol License Renewal Process

You can renew if:
- Your account is active with a valid business account number and pin number.
- Your alcohol account financial status must be current and not delinquent.
- The owners and/or principals of your business must be the same as those originally reported to the City of Atlanta through a tax application or a change form.
- The location of your business must be the same as originally reported to the City of Atlanta. Any changes to the physical location require Zoning approval.
- The legal entity/legal name holding the business account certificate must be the same as originally reported to the City of Atlanta.
After December 31, 2024, any submissions will be considered a failure to renew in time. You will have to pick up the renewal forms from the LPU office located at the Public Safety Annex at 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy. You will then have to set up an appointment with an alcohol investigator to submit the renewal, make payment and schedule a License Review Board hearing date. Current applicants not renewing by December 31, 2024, will be considered a failure to renew. Those agents must stop selling, distributing, manufacturing or storing alcohol.
