• The Special Operations Section (SOS) provides a variety of different patrol functions in support of the six patrol zones.
  • The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit specializes in hostage situations, barricaded gunman situations and bomb disposal. 
  • The Motors Unit specializes in the enforcement of traffic laws and in 
    managing the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, along with managing the school crossing guard program. 
  • Accident Investigations Unit investigates fatal and hit-and-run traffic accidents. 
  • Air Unit is used to assist the patrol units in a variety of functions, including but not limited to: support for vehicle and foot chases, stolen vehicle recovery, and managing traffic flow. 
  • Mounted Patrol is used for the purpose of providing a highly visible police presence and managing and dispersing crowds in the City of Atlanta in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Special Events Permits Unit handles all permits for street closures as well as large gathering permits city wide.
  • Tactical Traffic Unit responsibilities are to conduct high volume traffic stops with focus of safety along the highways and roadways with the City limits.   They patrol areas of concern focusing on traffic violation to detect and detour criminal activity through visibility as well as conduct interviews of stopped drivers to determine if the driver is involved in the criminal enterprise.
